What changed?

Our customer was having trouble getting traffic across a point to point microwave link. We ran test sets across the link at maximum speed with no problems. The customer called back with the same issue and we tested successfully. Looking at their network, we asked what has changed? ‘Nothing’ was the answer. They scoured their topology and found some antiquated unmanaged devices that they were unaware of and they began to remove them one by one. The problem persisted.

Looking beyond the hardware to their network traffic, it was found that they were running Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) hence large frame sizes. This was new. We tested the link and found that frame sizes greater than 1535 were not supported at the rev they were running and this can easily be remedied. Always ask ‘What has changed?’ It could be at any layer, not just the physical.
