The Need for Rooftop Management 

The Field Operations technicians were in the office for our customary Monday morning company meeting when a call came in from a customer reporting that the licensed radio link for a local hospital was down. We dispatched a technician to one side of the link and observed that the receive level had dropped but that the radio seemed to be operating properly and the radio/antenna on the roof looked normal.

We then drove to the other side of the link.  When we went to the roof to check the antenna/radio, we couldn’t believe what we saw…or didn’t see. The radio which was mounted on a wall had been obstructed by a large air conditioner unit that had been dropped on the roof over the weekend directly in front of the antenna and in the path to the other side.

The customer was frantic and had no backup system installed and asked us if there was anything we could do. We discovered an empty pipe mount located on an upper portion of the roof, about 15’ feet directly above the existing radio location. We got the extra coax needed to splice into the existing coax to extend its route to the new location.

We had the radio relocated, operating and realigned quickly… and had a very happy customer. With the proliferation of devices on rooftops the need for a Rooftop Management Plan is apparent.
